Workshop

Six handlooms in a courtyard near Buldan’s old weavers’ bazaar. We prepare the cloth here, from winding the yarn onto the warp to twisting the fringe.

On the looms today

There are six handlooms in the workshop. See which cloth is on which loom; fabric that comes off the loom reaches the shelf within a few days.

How a peshtemal is woven

  1. Preparing the warp

The threads are counted one by one to the warp plan and wound onto the warp beam. The Travertine peshtemal has 176 threads per repeat and 9 repeats across the width.

  2. Dressing the loom

Each thread is drawn through a heddle and a dent of the reed. This takes about a day per loom.

  3. Weaving

The shuttle carries the weft through the warp, and the reed beats each pick into place. A weaver makes 1–3 metres a day (sample).

  4. Twisting the fringe

When the cloth comes off the loom, the threads at each end are twisted in pairs by hand and knotted.

  5. Washing and folding

The cloth is washed once, dried in the shade, folded and put on the shelf.
